New publication of the volume "DanceSport’s Economy of Desire".
In this work, Meneau critically examines and deconstructs the rigid gender norms and heteronormative stereotypes that have historically been embedded within the world of competitive ballroom dancing (DanceSport). These norms shape the opportunities, desires, and choices of participants, contributing to the maintenance of a heteronormative gender binary.The book investigates this normative framework and explores how its network of power extends to and influences material objects (such as costumes and competition venues), discourses (including federation competition regulations, programme booklets, and judging criteria), and practices (such as dance performance and choreography).
Meneau focuses specifically on Latin American dance disciplines and demonstrates how the normative structure of DanceSport constrains their expression by excluding or rendering homosexuality invisible, while simultaneously objectifying and sexualising female dancers. These dynamics are reflected in all the elements that influence or constitute dancers’ performances on the competition floor, including registration procedures, dress codes, partner matching, collaboration, movement, and judging practices.
