Female Genital Mutilation or Modification? The socio-legal conundrums of the international zero-tolerance approach

On Wednesday 17 May, at 17.00, the CIVIS Gender Studies Network (CGSN) will organise a webinar about the topic of female genital mutilation.

The meeting is part of the CIVIS gender studies lectures, a cycle which aims to bring together and make visible ongoing gender research carried out in the CIVIS member universities.

Speaker will be Sarah O'Neill, medical anthropology professor, who obtained a PhD in Social Anthropology at Goldsmiths College in 2013. Her PhD research was concerned with local people’s opposition to the national ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Fouta Toro, northern Senegal. During the webinar O'Neill will speak about the growing medicalization of female's body in countries where FGM are still used and she will argue for the necessity to rethink our way to consider gender bodies, also by considering racial dynamics.

The webinar will take place digitally on ZoomTo receive a Zoom link and passcode, please register before the seminar by writing to: emil.edenborg@gender.su.se
