On 23th of January on Friday at 16.00 o’clock there is an online round table seminar - “Men in the vans, women on the streets: gender, nation, and resistance against forced mobilization in Ukraine and ex-Yugoslavia” organized by Faculty of Political and Social Sciences Scuola Normale Superiore Florence. The speakers will be Volodymyr Ishchenko (Freie Universität Berlin), Marta Havryshko (Clark University, US), Milica Popović (Austrian Academy of Sciences), Almut Rochowanski (Quincy Institute) and the moderator - Tarik Cyril Amar (Koç University, Turkey). The seminar will cover topics related to the mass forced mobilization of Ukrainian men (“basification”) that involves stuffing them into unmarked minibuses and often becomes more violent thereafter. It will delve into the gender aspects of this grassroots resistance with comparative perspective from the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s, where also forced mobilization was largely widespread.
