Rebel Sex: Male Combatants and Desire in Coercive Circumstances

Rebel Sex: Male Combatants and Desire in Coercive Circumstances will be presented by Dr. Holly Porter, Associate Professor in Politics and International Studies and Deputy Director of the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies. The seminar will take place on Monday, 21 October 2024, at 13:30 UTC+1 (12:30 UTC) at the Alison Richard Building in Cambridge, and will also be available online via Zoom with advance registration on this website.

Dr. Porter, an anthropologist specializing in Africa, focuses on issues of gender, sexualities, violence, and justice in post-war contexts. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in northern Uganda and worked in several other regions, including South Sudan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, and Palestine, addressing topics like gender-based violence, transitional justice, and human rights. She is also the author of After Rape: Violence Justice and Social Harmony in Uganda, which was a 2018 Herskovitz Book Prize finalist.

The event is part of the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies Multi-disciplinary Gender Research Seminar series for Michaelmas term 2024, providing a platform for academics and graduate students to present work-in-progress on gender topics in a welcoming and informal atmosphere. The seminars are organized and chaired by Sigal Spigel, and more information can be found on the Centre's website.
